Hunter Renfrow Could be an Option for Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have openly said they're looking for a slot wide receiver before the start of the season. They've done their homework on NFL Draft options, and the free agency pool still offers some vets, but what about a splashy trade?
One option that is on the table for the Steelers is Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver, Hunter Renfrow. While Pittsburgh hasn't made any known contact regarding the wideout, according to sources, the Raiders are open to discussion about dealing the vet this offseason.
Renfrow makes a lot of sense for Pittsburgh in a lot of ways. He's a slot wide receiver who's just 27 years old and a year removed from his best NFL season. He's a punt returner, who averages 9.7 yards per return throughout his career. And, he's reliable pair of veteran hands, who has an affordable contract.
Renfrow returns from a down year after playing just 10 games due to an oblique injury. He recorded just 36 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns in 2022.
The year prior, Renfrow had 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. He then signed a two-year deal worth $32.3 million, of which he'll receive $13.1 million this year and $13.7 million next year.
For the Steelers, taking on another wide receiver contract after signing Diontae Johnson to a two-year, $36 million deal isn't the best-case scenario, but at the same time, $29 million for two veterans this season isn't awful money compared to the rest of the receiver market in the NFL.
Renfrow adds experience to the Steelers' slot position alongside Calvin Austin, and brings security at the wide receiver position for the next two years.
With Kenny Pickett entering just year two of his rookie deal and the Steelers only having Alex Highsmith to sign to a long-term deal, the salary cap isn't much of a concern for this team right now.
The asking price for a 27-year-old coming off an injured season can't be high, either. The Steelers could possibly utilize a draft pick they would've selected a wide receiver with and send it to Vegas instead.
Yes, rookies are always exciting, but most draft picks don't work out, and the Steelers have plenty of experience in the field of missing on wide receivers.
If the Steelers made the call, the Raiders would list. And with a need for a slot receiver, asking about Renfrow makes sense for Pittsburgh.
