Steelers Aren't Getting Eric Bieniemy But Could Land a Different OC

The Pittsburgh Steelers won't get the top option on the market, but they could land another veteran coach.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will likely sign an assistant coach or two before the summer, but it's not going to be a splash signing like many fans are hoping. As promising as the addition of Eric Bieniemy is for any organization, what he is looking for and what the Steelers need don't match up.

We should talk about a promising assistant that could come to Pittsburgh, though. But we'll get there.

Bieniemy didn't leave the Chiefs to go and be a senior assistant or an assistant head coach to a man who isn't leaving his job anytime soon. If he wanted a promising future, he could've stayed in Kansas City and waited for Andy Reid to retire so he could move into the head coaching job with Patrick Mahomes.

He left because he's looking to prove himself - whether you believe he has to or not. Heading to a team like the Washington Commanders will show everyone in the NFL that he can turn any team into a winner. Working alongside Mike Tomlin and having to play second fiddle to Matt Canada is going to have the same look next offseason.

Bieniemy will head somewhere with the intention of quickly turning their offense around and then finding a head coaching job. Meanwhile, the Steelers will be looking for an assistant to provide offensive help and possibly turn into their next offensive coordinator if Canada's last year doesn't work out.

The name that seems to make the most sense is Pep Hamilton.

The former Houston Texans OC has plenty of experience working with young quarterbacks, with Andrew Luck and Justin Herbert on his resume. At one point, he had the league believing Davis Mills could turn into a full-time starter as well.

After a rough showing in Houston last season, it'll be hard for Hamilton to get another offensive coordinator gig this spring. So, if the Steelers are serious about hiring a Brian Flores-like coach on offense, Hamilton should be on the market, and has the perfect blend of experience to fill the role.

Pittsburgh has some leftover money with Flores leaving for Minnesota and assistant head coach John Mitchell retiring. It's expected that they add a name or two to their coaching staff with that extra cash.

If Hamilton is still floating around in the next month, he should be pretty high on the team's list of additions. Right there with Byron Leftwich but possibly more promising.
