Steelers Add More Family Ties in 2024 Mock NFL Draft
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers love adding family members to their roster. This year, they have two in Cam and Connor Heyward and now Nate and Nick Herbig. And next year, they stick with bloodlines - in a different fashion - in Pro Football Focus's way-too-early 2024 mock draft.
The Steelers, picking at No. 10, select Clemson linebacker Jeremaih Trotter Jr., son of Philadelphia Eagles legend Jeremaih Trotter Sr.
PFF went off of next year's Super Bowl odds to determine the draft order.
"The son of former All-Pro linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Sr., the sophomore linebacker has lived up to his father’s name and then some," PFF writes.
"The younger Trotter excels on passing plays, as he was the only Power Five linebacker with 80-plus grades as a pass-rusher and in coverage. Trotter was second in that same group in both passer rating allowed (42.9) and open target rate allowed (47.6%)."
Trotter played 14 games for Clemson this past season, recording 89 tackles, 13.5 for loss, 6.5 sacks and two interceptions.
Now, you're probably thinking, Trotter didn't play for the Steelers. You're right, but Mike Tomlin certainly has his ties to him.
The two faced off in the 2002 NFC Wildcard when Trotter's Eagles blew out Tomlin's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He finished his career with four Pro Bowls and an All-Pro selection.
With the Steelers adding Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts, they don't have a pressing need for an inside linebacker but should add youth to the position next offseason. Mark Robinson is the hopeful next generation for Pittsburgh, but adding Trotter will only raise the bar for the young moving forward.
Tomlin always seems to have a story about having his eyes on a prospect well before they join the Steelers. This time, that connection might be a story about watching his dad beat his team in the playoffs 20-plus years ago.
