Steelers Favorites to Land Raiders QB
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring all their options as they look to rebuild their quarterbacks room and an interesting name could appear on their radar in the coming weeks.
Bookies.com has given the Steelers the second-best to sign Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who is expected to be cut and become a free agent before his roster bonus hits later next month. Thompson gave Pittsburgh an 18.2% of adding Garoppolo to their roster this offseason.
Only the Minnesota Vikings, who Thompson gives a 22.2% chance of getting Garoppolo, have better odds than the Steelers. The Atlanta Falcons sit with a 13.3% chance, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers follow at 12.5%, the New England Patriots are next at 11.8% and the Washington Commanders and New York Jets each have a 10% chance or worse. Thompson gives it a 20% chance he signs with any other team and a 16.7% chance that no team picks up Garoppolo.
The Steelers currently have just one quarterback - 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett - under contract for the 2024 season. They cut veteran Mitch Trubisky and are expected to try and re-sign Mason Rudolph, who led them to a surprise playoff berth and a 3-1 record as a starter last season.
But should Rudolph not choose to return to Pittsburgh next season, the Steelers could tap Garoppolo to fill a veteran void in the quarterbacks room. He comes with baggage, though. After starting just six games and throwing seven touchdown passes to nine interceptions last season, Garoppolo was hit with a two-game suspension from the NFL for taking a prescription medication without league clearance.
Garoppolo has proven he can lead teams on deep playoff runs, but a shaky track record since would make him a gamble for the Steelers this offseason.
