Steelers Show Interest in Two BYU Offensive Standouts

The Pittsburgh Steelers have spoken with two Senior Bowl standouts at different offensive positions.
In this story:

MOBILE -- With the Pittsburgh Steelers having some potentially key needs going into the offseason at offensive tackle and questions about wide receiver. While in Mobile, Alabama, the Pittsburgh ended up meeting with two of BYU's best prospects who could fill two of those roles this season.

Left tackle Blake Freeland and wide receiver Puka Nacua, showed out on day one of the Senior Bowl, and immediately, you discovered Pittsburgh had an interest.

Freeland mentioned how he played a ton of wide zone at BYU and how that might be the best overall scheme fit for him. Steelers currently employ a mixture of gap and inside zone currently, and I wouldn't say Najee Harris is a great fit for his skillset for a wide zone running scheme. However, his potential leaves you to believe he'd adjust at the NFL level with some ease.

"For NFL comparison, I'd say, Spencer Brown and Andrew Whitworth, two big, tall tackles that played in the league," Freeland said.

Wide receiver, meanwhile, is a very interesting luxury need at the slot position going into this draft, which is why it was very interesting to see the Steelers meet with Nacua.

Nacua very much prides himself on his versatility and his ability to play everywhere, even the slot.

"At BYU I worked mainly outside receiver, worked in the slot, come out of the backfield, run wide zone and come out of the pistol," Nacua said. "I feel I am very versatile."

That type of versatility will definitely interest the Steelers for sure. A thicker-bodied guy with some real yards after the catch threat when it comes to his contact balance, physicality and fluidity to make guys miss. Steelers really lack a consistent YAC threat when it comes to strictly their wide receiver position, and a player like Nacua could definitely give them what they're missing in that regard.
