Steelers Land LSU Star in Latest Mock Draft
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are currently in the market for a wide receiver, ESPN's latest mock draft sees them avoiding a trade and landing their next starter with their first pick in the NFL Draft.
Mel Kiper released his third mock draft of the offseason, and has the Steelers staying put at pick No. 20, selecting a star wideout from LSU. With their first-round selection, Pittsburgh drafts Brian Thomas Jr., a speedy pass-catcher, who many view as one of the top wide receivers in this year's class.
"Just a few weeks ago, at the NFL combine, here's what Steelers general manager Omar Khan said to reporters about quarterback Kenny Pickett: "I have full faith in Kenny." A lot has changed since then, huh? Pickett was traded to the Eagles after Pittsburgh signed Russell Wilson, and then the team traded a conditional Day 3 pick in 2025 for Justin Fields, completing a total overhaul of the QB depth chart. For new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to really thrive, though, the Steelers should add a replacement for wideout Diontae Johnson, who was traded to Carolina," Kiper writes.
"Thomas, who ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the combine, has a tremendous blend of speed and size (6-foot-3). He caught 17 touchdown passes last season, leading the FBS. Pittsburgh had just 13 total touchdown passes in 2023. Thomas and George Pickens could form an exciting pass-catching duo."
Thomas finished his three-year career at LSU with 1,897 yards and 24 touchdowns. In his final college season, he added 68 receptions, 1,177 yards and 17 touchdowns to his career total.
The Steelers are currently in the hunt for a wide receiver trade, but if they don't find one, a first-round option is certainly on the table. And after meeting with Thomas at the NFL Combine, it's not unlikely he could be their pick.
