Steelers Named Landing Spot for Bears CB
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have been named an early landing spot for Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson as he's set to hit free agency this upcoming spring.
Pro Football Focus' Brad Spielberger has two options for the Steelers this coming offseason as they look to fix their cornerback troubles. The first is a prospect they can find the in the NFL Draft, and the second is a Chicago defensive back.
"Johnson is stuck playing a lot of soft zone and off coverage in Chicago and it doesn’t appear to fit his skillset all that well," Spielberger writes. "Pittsburgh traded for William Jackson III at last year’s deadline as he grew frustrated with the defense in Washington, and perhaps that could apply here too. Johnson is playing in a pivotal contract year in 2023 that is off to a very strong start, earning an 84.1 coverage grade through Week 3."
Johnson, 24, has played and started 42 games in his NFL career over the first four years of his career. The former second-round pick out of Utah only has one interception throughout to this point but has collected 32 pass deflections and has never allowed more than a 59% completion percentage.
This season, he's allowed just 46 yards to opposing receivers.
The Steelers have Patrick Peterson under contract for 2024, but Levi Wallace is set to hit the open market after this season. With Joey Porter Jr. growing into a starting role, adding another young option could give Pittsburgh the dynamic duo they've been searching for on the outside.
