Steelers Get Major Update Regarding Brock Purdy

The Pittsburgh Steelers got some big news about their Week 1 opponent.
In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers could see Brock Purdy under center when they take on the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1. General manager John Lynch confirmed the quarterback has been cleared to return and will participate during training camp following elbow surgery in the offseason.

Up until this point, it was uncertain if Purdy would be cleared in time for the start of the season. If he wasn't able to play, former first-round picks Trey Lance and Sam Darnold would compete for the starting job.

According to SI's Albert Breer, Purdy will be on a schedule where he will practice two days on and one day off.

It's not a guarantee Purdy wins the job heading into the season, but he appears to be the favorite. All three quarterbacks have received praise from head coach Kyle Shannahan and will all compete during camp.

Purdy underwent surgery on his throwing elbow during the offseason, but before his injury, he led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game. In five games as the starter, he went 5-0, throwing for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Whoever is the starter in Week 1 will face a new cornerback group for the Steelers in Levi Wallace, Joey Porter Jr. and Patrick Peterson. They'll also have to deal with the pass rush of T.J. Watt and newly-extended Alex Highsmith, as well as Cam Heyward, Larry Ogunjobi and Keaanu Benton.
