LATROBE -- Pittsburgh Steelers fullback Monte 'The Mullet' Pottebaum is walking away from the NFL, as the team announces he's retiring.

Pottebaum signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. An Iowa alum, Pottebaum was set to compete as the team's fullback, and was the only listed player at the position heading into training camp.

Pottebaum did come to Saint Vincent College with the Steelers and was practicing during the first week prior to his announcement.

The team will likely look at Connor Heyward as the fullback option this season. With the utilization of the position dying down in recent years, Heyward's versatility makes him an ideal option for what the Steelers will need out of a fullback.

The Steelers now have an open spot on their 90-man roster heading into the second week of training camp.
