The Pittsburgh Steelers have cut veteran CB Ahkello Witherspoon.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have informed veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon that he will be released, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Witherspoon joined the team in 2021 and played 13 games, including seven starts the last two seasons. After entering last year as the starter, he spent most of the season on Injured Reserve with a lingering hamstring issue. He accumulated four interceptions during his time in Pittsburgh.

Witherspoon's release was somewhat anticipated this offseason due to the increased volume of the cornerback room. Pittsburgh drafted Joey Porter Jr. and Cory Trice Jr. and signed Patrick Peterson, Chandon Sullivan, Luq Barcoo and Madre Harper during the spring.

Pittsburgh will now sift through their remaining cornerbacks to find a backup behind Peterson, Levi Wallace and Porter Jr. James Pierre appears to be a favorite for the competition, with Harper and Trice having opportunities on the outside.

The Steelers save $4 million in cap space with Witherspoon's release.
