Steelers Make Three Roster Moves Official

The Pittsburgh Steelers swapped a wide receiver for a linebacker and a long snapper.

PITTSBURGH -- Reports of two roster moves coming for the Pittsburgh Steelers hung in the air during the first few days following the conclusion of OTAs and this week, the team made those moves official.

The Steelers finalized the addition of former West Virginia, Bears and Raiders linebacker - and Bethel Park native - Nick Kwiatkoski and former Mountaineers and XFL long snapper, Rex Sunahara. They also released wide receiver Anthony Miller.

Kwiatkowski brings starting experience and a track record of production to the Steelers' linebacker room. He's appeared in 89 games and made 34 starts over the course of his seven-year career in professional football.

A fourth-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2016, spent four years as a solid reserve backer before signing a three-year, $21 million free agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. His two seasons with the Raiders were the best of his career. He played in 20 games and made 12 starts, amassing 102 total tackles, four tackles for loss, an interception and two forced fumbles.

He spent last season in a reserve role with the Atlanta Falcons, playing in 12 games and recording just seven tackles.

Sunahara entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2020. He signed a reserve/futures contract with Miami prior to the 2021 season and was then released for a second time, signed and released again in August. He then joined the Steelers late in 2021 but did not make the roster or appear in any games.

Sunahara spent this past spring with the Arlington Renegades of the XFL. The 6'2 and 242-pound Sunahara is expected to compete with incumbent long snapper Chrisitan Kuntz during training camp.

The Steelers had resigned Miller to a one-year contract in January and he was expected to compete for time as a slot receiver in his third season with the team but he did not appear in a game last year for the Steelers after suffering a season-ending injury in the preseason. He played in one contest after coming over from the Houston Texans and signing with the practice squad in 2021. He caught one pass for two yards in a November game against the Bengals that year.

Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, Miller was a second-round pick of the Chicago Bears, where he appeared in 47 games - starting 17 - and caught passes from current Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Miller tallied 134 receptions for 1,564 yards and 11 touchdowns over three seasons. He also amassed 183 kick return yards from 2018 to 2020 in Chicago.
