Steelers UDFA Tracker: Pittsburgh Might've Signed Coolest Guy in NFL Draft
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers finished their 2023 NFL Draft with seven picks. Now, they're adding undrafted free agents from the rest of the rookie class.
The Steelers typically sign 10 undrafted rookies to their summer roster and then invite others to rookie mini camp, where they'll have an opportunity to compete for a 90-man roster spot.
Here's who they have signed so far:
Tanner Morgan, QB, Minnesota
The Steelers need a third quarterback, and it appears Morgan will get the first opportunity to be that player in 2023. He comes to the NFL after five years at Minnesota, throwing for 9.454 yards and 65 touchdowns.
Monte Pottebaum, FB, Iowa
Best known for his nickname "Monte the Mullet," Pottebaum comes to Pittsburgh with hopes of replacing Derrek Watt. However, offensive coordinator Matt Canada said after the selection of Darnell Washington that second-year player Connor Heyward could see time in that position as well this season.
Judging by his nickname, it's hard to say this player doesn't make the roster. Completely ignoring what he can do on a football field, of course.
Jordan Byrd, RB, San Diego State
The Steelers have their two running backs in Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, but they won't shy away from finding another diamond in the undrafted free agent pool. Byrd rushed for 1,353 yards and 12 touchdowns in five years for the Aztecs.
David Perales, DE, Fresno State
The Steelers added a defensive tackle in Keeanu Benton and an outside linebacker in Nick Herbig during the NFL Draft. Now, they're adding another option in Perales. After 23 sacks in college, he'll have a shot to provide depth to Pittsburgh's defensive line.
B.T. Potter, K, Clemson
There aren't many jobs more secure on the Steelers roster than Chris Boswell's. That being said, Potter has an opportunity to come in and take advantage of a full summer and three preseason games worth of film, while also competing to beat out the tenured kicker. He made 100% of his extra points and 75% of field goals in college.
Trevor Downing, C, Iowa State
Downing moved to center this past season and played all 12 games for Iowa State. An All-Big 12 selection, Downing was an anchor for an offense that averaged 369.8 yards per game.
James Nyamwaya, DE, Merrimack College
Nyamwaya played 10 games in 2022 and record 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He'll come to Pittsburgh with an opportunity to prove himself worthy of a depth role on the defensive line.
