Report: Steelers Have Week to Re-Sign Cam Sutton
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are counting down the clock before they lose money and let cornerback Cam Sutton walk into free agency for the first time in his career.
According to former NFL agent Joel Corry, Sutton's contract is set to void five days after the Super Bowl, meaning he officially becomes an unrestricted free agent on Friday. With that, the Steelers will also lose $2.1 million that they added to the end of Sutton's last deal.
Sutton signed a two-year, $9 million with the Steelers last time he was set to hit the open market, but the team added voids years to help keep their salary cap down.
Therefore, Pittsburgh now has five days to work out a new deal with their star cornerback before his $2.1 million payout becomes dead cap for the Steelers.
The Steelers can obviously continue to negotiate with Sutton during the offseason in hopes of re-signing him. Coming off career-highs in interceptions (3) and pass deflections (15), Pittsburgh seems to have Sutton at the top of their free agency list, and Sutton has made it known he'd like to return as well.
"I'm not a guy always being on the move, I just want to be around," Sutton said at the end of the season. "Like I said, I feel like I've established a lot here, seeing so much ball year in and year out, and just a comfortability of the guys in the system."
According to Spotrac, Sutton's market value this offseason is in the range of three years, $22.9 million, with an average salary of $7.6 million per season. That would make him the 30th-highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, right above his former teammate Mike Hilton.
The Steelers are already looking for ways to clear cap space as they currently sit with roughly $1 million in available cap space. However, they could cut players like William Jackson III and Mitch Trubisky to clear over $10 million.
