Steelers Keep Winning Chase Claypool Trade: Bears Unhappy

The Chicago Bears aren't thrilled with the former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into training camp with some expectation that second-round pick Joey Porter Jr. will make an immediate impact on the defense. Meanwhile, the addition of Chase Claypool doesn't appear to be working out for the Chicago Bears.

The Steelers sent Claypool to the Bears in exchange for a second-round pick, 32nd overall at the trade deadline. What they got with that selection is Porter. Chicago got a wide receiver they believed would bolster Justin Field's development. But right now, it appears the ice is pretty thin for Claypool.

According to Marc Silverman of ESPN’s Waddle & Silvy Show, those inside the Bears organization has not met the team's expectations, and his mentality seems to be off heading into his first full season with the team.

"I have heard from a few people inside that building that he is not somebody who is very self-motivated," Silverman said.

Claypool finished last season with the Bears with just 10 receptions for 140 yards. He didn't score in 2022.

Claypool is dealing with injuries as well, according to Silverman. The hope from the Bears is that he'll be healthy and fully into turning his narrative around this season.

If he doesn't, it'll be interesting to see where the final year of his rookie deal takes him.

As for Porter, he's continued to develop behind Patrick Peterson and Levi Wallace. So far, coaches and players have been impressed, and Porter continues to feel more comfortable in the system.

"Just great to be out there with the ‘ones’ and all the guys," Porter told TribLive during minicamp. "The communication is a big part of (being with) the ‘ones,’ so I am just trying to keep up with them and keep learning."

In what was Omar Khan's first trade deadline as general manager, it appears the Steelers hold an early lead as the winner.
