Steelers Give Kenny Pickett's Number to Kicker
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new No. 8. After two seasons of Kenny Pickett wearing the number, they're handing it off, giving it to newly-signed kicker Matthew Wright, according to the NFL Jersey Numbers X account.
Pickett wore No. 8 throughout his entire tenture in Pittsburgh, starting at Pitt and working his way into the NFL. The former first-round pick is now set to wear No. 7 after being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, with Wright taking over the number with the Steelers.
Wright was signed by the Steelers ahead of OTAs and mini camp, giving them a second kicker on the roster for offseason workouts. The team typically brings two kickers into training camp to familiarize themselves with someone else, just in case they need an emergency kicker during the season.
Right now, the expectation is not that Wright will beat out Chris Boswell.
As for Pickett, he was traded for a third-round pick and two sixth-round picks to Philadelphia after he voiced his desire to move on from the team following the Russell Wilson addition. He's now set to be the backup to Jalen Hurts.
