Steelers Named Landing Spot for Cowboys WR
PITTSBURGH -- Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup is looking for a new NFL home, and the Pittsburgh Steelers have been named his best fit.
The Steelers recently traded Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers and then added Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins and Cordarrelle Patterson. While George Pickens is viewed as their No. 1 receiver, and Calvin Austin should take a step forward in year three, the team still needs a No. 2.
Pro Football Network believes Gallup could be that No. 2.
"The Steelers traded WR Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers earlier this month, leaving them with George Pickens and a host of question marks on their wideout depth chart. Pittsburgh has signed Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins, neither of whom is an inspiring choice as a starting wide receiver," PFN writes.
"Michael Gallup hasn’t been the same player since tearing his ACL in 2022 but has a 1,000-yard campaign (2019) on his ledger. The 6’1″, 200-pounder can give the Steelers more size on the perimeter and wouldn’t prevent them from drafting an early-round WR. Gallup has drawn free agent interest from the Panthers and Ravens since being released by the Dallas Cowboys in early March."
Gallup, 28, caught 34 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns last season. He hasn't surpassed 500 yards in a year since 2020.
The Steelers could look at Gallup as a cheaper No. 2, but the NFL Draft remains the most realistic option for them at adding a wideout. Expect the team to target an addition during the first four rounds of the draft.
