Shannon Sharpe Continues Attacking Steelers
PITTSBURGH -- Shannon Sharpe doesn't want to leave the Pittsburgh Steelers alone - at least not yet. After he and quarterback Russell Wilson butted heads, the Hall of Famer and podcast host is back again with more harsh words about the black and gold.
It all started with Sharpe and Wilson going back-and-forth over Wilson's words about helping to evolve the game of football for black quarterbacks.
"For me to be able to go to back-to-back Super Bowls, and win one of them, I think opened up a lot of doors,” Wilson said in an interview with ESSENCE. "Now you see guys like Patrick Mahomes who won it; it’s really just us so far, but there’s more to come.” The emergence of quarterbacks like Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson and C.J. Stroud, to name a few, is indicative of a new era in football and a glimpse into what the sport is trending toward."
Sharpe criticized Wilson's words, asking why he never mentioned other players who came before him.
"So what role did Doug Williams play? The first African-American quarterback to actually get to and win the Super Bowl and win MVP," Sharpe said to his co-host Chad Johnson. "So what about Shack Harris? What about Joe Gilliam? So what did Marlin Briscoe did? Jack Harry? Steve McNair? They opened no doors? Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick? It was you?"
Wilson eventually responded, clarifying his words.
Now, Sharpe is back with more tough words against the Steelers. This time, he's not going after the quarterback, but rather the entire team as a whole, saying he hopes the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos beat them this season when they match up.
"I wish him the best in Pittsburgh, except when they play the Ravens, and if they play the Broncos," Sharpe said on the Nightcap Podcast. "I want the Ravens to beat the brakes off of them twice. And if they play the Broncos, I want the Broncos to win."
His co-host, Chad Johnson, said he believes the Steelers are going to be good this season after adding multiple pieces in free agency like Wilson, Patrick Queen and others. But Sharpe doesn't care. He's hoping for multiple losses against his former NFL teams.
"Steelers was my favorite team growing up. Unfortunately, that had to change once I got drafted," Sharpe said. "We hated the Steelers, and we still do. Some things never change."
