'Best Coach in History!' Nick Caserio Sings Praises of Bill Belichick at NFL Combine
Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio game to the franchise after nearly two decades with the New England Patriots.
During that time, Caserio served in a variety of roles, including as a personnel assistant, a scout, the director of pro personnel, an assistant coach and finally as the director of player personnel - a position he held for 12 years.
In the 20 years he spent with the franchise, Caserio spent the majority of that time working closely with legendary head coach Bill Belichick, who retired earlier this offseason after 24 seasons in Foxboro.
And when asked about Belichick during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Caserio gushed about his former colleague.
“I’d say the league is always better when people like Bill Belichick are around,” Caserio said. “You look at this off-season, coach [Pete] Carroll, coach Belichick. Coach Belichick is the best coach in the history of not only football, [but] sport in my opinion. He’s a big reason that I am where I am today, so I have a lot of respect, and appreciation, and admiration for him."
After so much time with the franchise, it could be argued that - outside of owner Robert Kraft - no one knew Belichick or the Patriots franchise better than Caserio.
In fact, there was a brief time this offseason in which it was rumored by some that Caserio would return to New England as the franchise's new GM after the exit of Belichick.
Is Re-Signing Devin Singletary a Realistic Option for Texans?
Caserio, of course, firmly shot down those rumors. And when asked about the future of New England, he wished his former team nothing but the best.
“There’s a number of folks in New England that they have in place that they feel comfortable with," Caserio said. "They have a lot of talented people. They’re probably going through a process of trying to figure things out, and I think all of us, that’s what we do each year; you just sort of try to figure things out. Certainly wish them nothing but the best."
