Texans Pass Rusher Jonathan Greenard to Sign With Vikings
The legal tampering period has officially begun in the NFL, and free agency is already off to the races.
On Monday, now-former Houston Texans defensive end Jonathan Greenard agreed to a four-year, $76 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings, where he is expected to become the replacement for star pass rusher, Danielle Hunter, according to multiple reports.
Entering his fifth NFL season, Greenard has spent the last four with Houston, and throughout the first three, he was largely inconsistent.
However, last season under Ryans, Greenard had a career-best year across the board, finishing with 12.5 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, 32 pressures, and 22 QB hits.
And while he is appreciative of both the opportunity and the loyalty Houston has shown him, he knows that the final decision is up to him. And he has now taken advantage of that opportunity.
“I’m appreciative of the opportunity that Houston has given me," Grennard said. "They stayed with me throughout the years. They could’ve gone left at any time through the injuries and all that and they stuck beside me. All I can be is thankful for the opportunity that they have given me. If this is the last rodeo, I appreciate everything, but it’s not for me to decide.”
Now, the Texans will look elsewhere for a replacement of their own, with Hunter a distinct possibility, alongside a myriad of other options.
Fortunately for Houston, they will have plenty of cap space to utilize, with more than $60 million at their disposal once free agency officially opens on Wednesday.
