Coach DeMeco Ryans Praises 'Much Better' Texans OL

The Houston Texans only managed a field goal in Saturday's preseason affair, but head coach DeMeco Ryans stood by his offensive line.

The Houston Texans lost to the Miami Dolphins on Saturday, 28-3, but head coach DeMeco Ryans was more tuned in to the progress his team made.

Ryans took time during his post game press conference to shout out his offensive line, a unit that performed admirably despite lackluster offensive production.

“They protected much better this week,” Ryans began. “It was good to see. That’s what we need from our O-Line.”

Last week, Houston beat the New England Patriots, 20-9. Still, they made headlines after the starters struggled to move the ball and quarterback CJ Stroud looked erratic in his debut. A sizable portion of the blame was handed to the offensive linemen who were unable to consistently protect the rookie passer.

“I challenged them in last night's meetings,” Ryans said. “Challenged them before the game.”

The praise was well-deserved. The Texans did not allow a sack on Saturday, and their rookie quarterback felt the residual effects. Unsurprisingly, with better protection, Stroud looked the part. He completed seven of 12 attempts for 60 yards.

Communication breakdowns stifled the Houston's drives, but for the first time, Texans fans saw the face of their franchise trust his line and—in turn—his own internal clock. For both the neophyte and his protectors, Saturday marked a step in the right direction.

Further, the Dolphins did not make life easy for Houston. They sent out a majority of their starters, including impact edge rusher Bradley Chubb. The unit simply stepped up to the plate. In doing so, they have rightfully earned some recognition from the man in charge. Ryans swiftly concluded his praise.

“I’m proud of the O-Line.”
