Texans Sign Laremy Tunsil to 'Market Setting' 3-Year Extension
HOUSTON — The Houston Texans have signed Pro-Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a three-year extension worth up to $75 million, as first according to reports.
The deal also includes $60 million in total guarantees, making Tunsil the highest-paid offensive tackle in league history, in what has been described as a 'true reset on the market' at the position.
Tunsil joined the Texans in a block-buster trade in 2019. And with the expectation of 2021, which ended his season due to injury, the veteran tackle has been Houston's best offensive lineman over the last four seasons.
Tunsil had arguably his best season for the 3-13-1 Texans in 2022. He finished his fourth season in Houston and had 676 pass-blocking snaps, 17 pressures, and one sack.
"I want to turn this program around,” Tunsil said. “That’s what I want: to turn this organization around from a losing organization into a winning organization. I want to finish my career here in Houston."
Tunsil's extension came a week after rumors began that the Kansas City Chiefs were interested in trading for Houston's left tackle following their free agency loss of Orlando Brown.
Tunsil's extension also came following the trade of veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks.
Houston traded Cooks to the Dallas Cowboys early Sunday for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024, opening the door to Tunsil's new contract.
And given that the team is on the verge of drafting a rookie quarterback during the 2023 NFL Draft, the Texans and Tunsil are in a win-win situation.
