CEO Cal McNair Approved As Texans Majority Owner
Cal McNair is officially taking over the Houston Texans.
During the league owner's meeting Tuesday morning, owners voted to name McNair the new principal owner of Texans in place of his mother, Janice. According to reports, it was a unanimous vote.
“The Houston Texans mean so much to our family and I’m extremely proud that Cal will continue to lead the franchise moving forward," Janice McNair said in a statement. "He has done such a terrific job as our CEO and we believe this move is what’s best for everyone involved with the organization to secure our future under Cal’s leadership. I know how pleased Bob would be to see this and our fans should be incredibly excited about the direction we are headed."
McNair, who was previously the team’s CEO/chair, is now the team’s official representative, in place of Janice, who had served in the role since 2018 after her husband and team founder Bob McNair passed away.
Cal McNair has run the day-to-day football operations for his mother ever since. Janice, 87, was not present for the vote, but it was reported following her trial against her son, Cary, that she was more than in favor of the move for Cal to take over full-time.
“I first want to acknowledge the incredible work my mom has done over the last five years since taking over," Cal McNair said in a statement. "She has been an inspirational leader for our family, our team and our community. I can’t thank her enough for the foundation she has helped build and her countless contributions both on and off the field. It’s an exciting time to be a Houston Texan and I’m honored to lead this franchise. This move ensures the long-term stability of our franchise and we will continue to operate the way we have been over the last couple years, pursuing a championship for the City of Houston while doing great things in the community and for our fans.”
A native of Houston, Cal McNair, 62, grew up and attended Cypress-Fairbanks High School. He also attended the University of Texas and walked on to the football program. He was first named vice chair of the franchise in 2008. He was later promoted to chief operating officer in 2012.
Cal McNair was promoted to chair shortly before his father passed away after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2018. He later took over as CEO in 2019.
The Texans are coming off their most successful season in four years under first-year coach DeMeco Ryans and Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud. They finished 11-8, winning the AFC South for the first time since 2019. Behind Stroud's three-touchdown performance, the Texans also picked up their first playoff win in four years with a victory over the Cleveland Browns in the wild-card round.
" I will continue to support Cal and the team in every way that I can and, of course, be rooting for us each and every week," said Janice McNair.
Since Cal McNair took over the Texans' daily procedures, the franchise has posted a 31-51-1 record.
