Texans Target Chris Harris for Defensive Coordinator
The Houston Texans finally have their man in DeMeco Ryans, and now it's time to fill out Ryans' staff.
The Texans have reportedly reached out to the Washington Commanders and requested permission to interview former defensive backs coach Chris Harris for the vacant Houston defensive coordinator job.
Harris had reportedly been linked to the Tennessee Titans' defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach position. But no announcement was ever made as Harris is apparently keeping his options open as other teams are now showing interest.
Harris has also been linked to possible jobs in other organizations such as the San Francisco 49ers. But it seems Harris wants to explore all options before making any decisions.
Houston has shown interest in several candidates to fill the vacant DC position. The position has been linked to Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel, 49ers passing game specialist/secondary coach Cory Undlin, and 49ers defensive line coach Kris Kocurek.
Manuel is the only one of the four who has experience as a coordinator, but with Ryans as the head coach, that probably doesn't matter.
Harris enjoyed an eight-year career as a player in the NFL as a free safety from 2005-2012 with the Chicago Bears, Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions, and Jacksonville Jaguars.
As a coach, he has experience with the Bears, Chargers, and Commanders. His Wikipedia page has him listed as being employed by the Titans, but no official statement from either party has been issued.
