BREAKING: Texans QB Name C.J. Stroud Week 1 Starter
The Houston Texans finished their preseason schedule with a 17-13 road victory over the New Orleans Saints Sunday night at the Caesars Superdome.
But that wasn't the biggest news of the night.
After making his third consecutive preseason start, C.J. Stroud got the call Texans fans had been anticipating for weeks, with coach DeMeco Ryans announcing him as the team's starting quarterback for their regular season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 10.
Following Ryans' announcement, all 32 teams have named their starting quarterback entering Week 1 of the 2023 campaign. Stroud was in a quarterback competition with the incumbent Davis Mills since OTAs in May.
"C.J. will be the Week 1 starter in Baltimore," Ryans said. "Over the course of the entire process of OTAs, training camp and preseason, We have been able to see the complete product, while knowing C.J.'s desire to get better."
Stroud played two drives against the Saints but showcased his development with each snap. He finished the night with 16 yards while going 2-for-4. During his second series of the game, Stroud capped off his preseason performance with his first career touchdown.
He led the Texans on a 43-yard possession, which ended with the rookie quarterback finding wide receiver Nico Collins in the end zone. But before connecting with Collins, Stroud made a significant play by finding tight end Dalton Schultz for a 13-yard gain on 3rd and 2.
Stroud will become the second rookie quarterback in franchise history to start the season for the Texans. David Carr held the honor during the Texans' inaugural game in 2002.
