Texans C.J. Stroud Facing 'Steepest Learning Curve' Among Rookie QB's?
Depending on who you ask, the Houston Texans completely fooled everyone when they selected Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick. With rookie minicamp starting up, all eyes will be on the new franchise quarterback in Houston.
Of course, there is plenty of reason to believe that Stroud will flourish for the Texans. However, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, he could be facing an uphill climb in understanding the Houston offense.
"Big arm. I was talking to somebody over there who said that the arm strength was on full display," Fowler said. "But the Texans are not worried about that, they're worried about speeding him up to the communication of the new offense."
"Because I talked to some teams around the league who believe Stroud might have the steepest learning curve of all the new quarterbacks because of the offense he's walking into."
In his two seasons starting at Ohio State, Stroud had no trouble tearing apart defenses. As a starter, he threw for 8,123 yards with 85 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions while completing 69.3 percent of his passes.
Where the problem could come, though, is the new Texans offense. With new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik in Houston, the offense will be one Stroud hasn't run before.
"It's that San Francisco 49ers tree, with first-time coordinator Bobby Slowik," Fowler said. "So, it's different from what he was doing at Ohio State; he's got to be in the huddle communicating, being loud, learning all the verbiage... They wholly believe he can handle that."
A learning curve is to be expected for any rookie, but especially a quarterback. Stroud has shown he has what it takes, though, and once gets the system under his belt then he has a bright future in Houston.
