Ex Texans Coach Gary Kubiak 'Very Proud' of DeMeco Ryans
Former Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak selected Alabama linebacker DeMeco Ryans with the 33rd pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, hoping to improve their linebacker core. Ryans played for six seasons under Kubiak's leadership, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year and earning Pro Bowl honors twice.
Now, 17 years later, Ryans is the Texans coach, and Kubiak could not be prouder.
"I drafted DeMeco, he was a great player, but 10 times better as a person," Kubiak told Josh Criswell in an interview. "I'm very proud of him, he's a great kid."
Kubiak spoke highly of his former linebacker, stating he's the right man for the coaching job.
"I can tell you this, the city of Houston's got a tremendous young man running the program," Kubiak said. "Just get behind him, he'll do the work and I have no doubt he'll be successful."
Kubiak had more experience with the Texans than any other coach. From 2006-2013, Kubiak logged a record of 61-64 but won AFC South division titles in 2011 and 2012.
Over a decade later, he believes Ryans' experience as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator will translate to the Texans.
"He knows how to do it the right way, he's been around some good programs," Kubiak said. "He's got his hands full, but he works his tail off."
Ryans will continue "working his tail off" as the Texans begin training camp on July 28.
