Could Ex Cowboys' RB Ezekiel Elliott Sign With Texans As Free Agent?
HOUSTON — The Dallas Cowboys released Ezekiel Elliott Wednesday afternoon, which made the three-time Pro Bowl running back a free agent.
Elliott will have a small market where he can begin his post-Cowboys career. And according to CBS Sports, the Houston Texans have a chance to be one of a few suitors who could land Elliott.
"The Texans were 31st in the league in rush yards per game, rushing touchdowns, and yards per carry — so any player would be an upgrade for that offense. Elliott could certainly get his carries in Houston, paving the way for a young quarterback." — Jeff Kerr
If the Texans were to land Elliott, he would take the helm as Houston's No. 2 running back behind rookie sensation Dameon Pierce.
Before his season ended due to a foot injury, Pierce had rushed for 939 yards on 220 carries through the first 13 games. But during Pierce's four-game absence, the Texans improved rushing attack took a major decline. Houston averaged 64.7 yards on the ground to close the season without Pierce.
The acquisition of Mike Boone is the lone running back the Texans have added since the start of free agency. And the potential to add Elliott would make for an essential upgrade in Houston's backfield.
In Elliott's final season with the Cowboys, he finished the 2022 campaign rushing for 876 yards on 231 attempts and a dozen touchdowns.
