Texans RB Dameon Pierce Could Be 'Certified Star' in Bobby Slowik Offense

The Houston Texans have a possible star waiting in the wings with Dameon Pierce spearheading the running back room.
In this story:

The Houston Texans selected Dameon Pierce in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and the rookie made an instant impact. One of the few offensive bright spots for the team last year, Pierce earned his keep.

Despite missing the last four games of the season due to injury, he still logged 939 yards and four scores on 220 carries. And NFL.com says the biggest Texans storyline is Pierce's chance to become a "certified star."

"Pierce put up nearly 1,000 rushing yards in 13 games as a rookie in 2022 before his season was ultimately ended by a sprained ankle. His pass-catching numbers (30 grabs, 165 yards, one TD) were not impressive, but it's hard to hold that against him, given the lack of production around him in Houston last year," NFL.com wrote.

And let's unpack that a bit. Pierce ran behind one of the league's worst offensive lines last season, having never played a pro snap beforehand, and balled out.

With an improved O-line, a year under his belt and a new offensive coordinator in Bobby Slowik, this is the year of Dameon Pierce — despite splitting carries.

"He could end up sharing more of the load with offseason signee Devin Singletary, but even so, a leap to the next level could be in line for Pierce under Slowik, who saw firsthand how San Francisco got the most out of Christian McCaffrey," NFL.com concluded.

Bingo. McCaffrey's former coach. Singletary to split carries, helping Pierce stay fresh. And a new buzz around the Texans. The stars have aligned for Pierce, and he's due for a big 2023.
