Texans' Dameon Pierce vs. Devin Singletary: ‘More Than One Guy Can Eat!'

Houston Texans' running back Devin Singletary is excited to share the backfield with budding star Dameon Pierce.
In this story:

Despite running back Dameon Pierce rushing for 939 yards in an impressive rookie season, the Houston Texans signed veteran rusher Devin Singletary to a one-year deal this offseason in attempt to bolster their skill-position talent.

The former Buffalo Bill knows that he's entering his first season with the Texans in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, but believes that he and Pierce can co-exist in Bobby Slowik's offense, even though they are theoretically in competition for touches.

“For one, it’s respect,” Singletary said. “We respect each other for sure. Two is — and this offense hasn’t been showing that — more than one guy can eat. You know what I’m saying? More than one guy can eat.”

The reality is that Singletary may prove to be a nice change-of-pace from the bruising style of Pierce. In four seasons with the Bills, Singletary rushed for 3,151 yards and added 145 receptions. Slowik -- the new offensive coordinator -- has previously worked under San Francisco 49ers' coach Kyle Shanahan, who typically likes to have a stable of running backs at his disposal.

New Houston coach DeMeco Ryans obviously has a defensive background and with rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud likely to be under center in Week 1, the Texans may lean heavily on the running game early in the season, meaning ample opportunity will exist for Singletary to be productive.

But the encouraging sign for the Texans -- both in 2023 and the foreseeable future -- is that Singletary is among a slew of veterans who have raved about Stroud, who was the No. 2 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft.

“Man, he’s bright. He’s a bright, young man,” Singletary said of Stroud earlier this summer. “He’s coming along well. It’s a lot as a young quarterback, coming in and learning a new offense – coming from college and coming here with grown men… You’re looked at as a leader out of the gate. But he’s handling it well. He’s a very humble guy and always comes into work – definitely.”

And if things work out with C.J.? It'll help the Houston running backs "eat.''
