Texans Expected to Hire Matt Burke as Defensive Coordinator

Matt Burke will join DeMeco Ryans' Houston Texans staff after a year in Arizona as the defensive line coach.
In this story:

After a lackluster 3-13-1 record in 2022 that resulted in the firing of former Texans coach Lovie Smith, the team thinks it has their man in former player DeMeco Ryans.

Now, Ryans thinks he has his man to lead the defense.

Per NFL Network, Houston is expected to hire Matt Burke as its defensive coordinator after an interview earlier this week.

Burke was the defensive line coach for the Cardinals last season and the Jets' game management coach in 2021. He previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Dolphins in 2017-18, and has prior coaching experience with the Eagles, Bengals, Lions, and Titans since entering the NFL coaching ranks in 2004.

Burke, 46, will take over a squad that allowed an average of 24.7 points per game while letting opponents gain 420 yards per contest. Last season the defense allowed almost twice as many touchdowns (48) as the offense was able to score (28).

While serving as the defensive coordinator in Miami, Burke's squads ranked 29th and 30th overall in the league, while the passing and rushing defenses didn't fare much better.

Burke played collegiately at Dartmouth and was part of an undefeated Ivy League championship team in 1996.
