New Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans Lands 'Dream Job' With Houston

After rumors and reports ran wild over the past few weeks, DeMeco Ryans has finally been named the head coach of the Houston Texans
In this story:

The Houston Texans finally have their new head coach, in former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, DeMeco Ryans, who agreed to a six-year deal with the franchise on Tuesday.

And according to Ryans, landing in Houston - the place where he began his NFL journey as a rookie second-round pick out of Alabama - is nothing short of a dream.

"I'd like to first thank the San Francisco 49ers, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch for six incredible seasons where I grew as a coach and a man," Ryans said in a statement. "I couldn't be prouder of what we accomplished together, and I will always cherish the relationships I built there. Being the head coach of the Houston Texans is my dream job and my family is thrilled to be back in H-Town."

He now becomes the sixth head coach in franchise history, and the fourth in as many years, following the one-year tenures of Lovie Smith and David Culley, and the seven-season stint from Bill O'Brien.

Ryans played in Houston under the franchise's second head coach, Gary Kubiak.

Now, the former first-team All-Pro and two-time pro-bowl linebacker with Houston returns home, having learned what it takes to win at a high level, having helped San Francisco reach back-to-back NFC championship games.

He also helped the 49ers cultivate one of the NFL's top defensive units, which in 2022, led the league in total defense and scoring, and was second in rush defense.

And thanks to his success with San Francisco, Ryans now intends on turning Houston into an AFC powerhouse of its own.

"I have been around the game of football my entire life and I've always had a natural ability to lead others," Ryans continued. "I know what it takes to win and be successful in this league as both a player and coach. We're going to build a program filled with players who have a special work ethic and relentless mindset. I understand the responsibility I have to this organization and to the fans of Houston to build a winner and I can't wait to get to work."
