HOUSTON — Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. is expected to miss six to eight weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury Wednesday morning during practice. Aaron Wilson of KPRC was the first to report.

Defensive coordinator Matt Burke revealed Stingley started to experience discomfort following practice.

This marks the second hamstring injury Stingley sustained in his short time as a member of the Houston Texans. He missed the final eight games of last season due to the same injury in 2022.

"'Whoever is out there, throughout the NFL, things happen," coach DeMeco Ryans said. "For us, it's no different. We expect guys to do their best... "Derek has done a great job for us throughout OTAs, training camp, and even for the start of the season. He has done a great job all year."

With Stingley out, the Texans will depend upon Shaquill Griffin to start in his absence during their Week 3 contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Stingley was having a solid start to his sophomore season, giving up 37 yards on four catches while adding eight tackles. According to Pro Football Focus, Stingley had a pass coverage grade of 64.0.

Stingley has not lived up to the notion that made him a sought-after prospect coming out of LSU in 2022. But despite his performance, Stingley had a solid first season.

He was the only rookie cornerback who did not allow a touchdown while registering 43 tackles, five pass deflections, and 1.0 sacks.

Injuries have taken a toll on the Texans since training camp. Over the past week, Houston's secondary has been hampered by injuries due to the loss of Tavierre Thomas, who broke his hand during the Texans' Week 2 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts.
