Texans GM Nick Caserio Believes Coach DeMeco Ryans Provides Groundwork For Success

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio believes building a successful franchise similar to his predecessors starts with DeMeco Ryans as coach.

HOUSTON — Nick Caserio has not shied away from revealing his desires for the Houston Texans. Since becoming the general manager in January 2021, Caserio has expressed interest in building a franchise with sustained success.

As he enters year three of his tenure, the Texans have won seven games and fired two coaches. But the hiring of coach DeMeco Ryans could be the groundwork toward helping Caserio build a franchise that could replicate the success of its predecessors.

"We're excited about the opportunity in front of us," Caserio said. "You have to start somewhere. You have to put your feet on the ground somewhere, and here's where we are today. We have our feet on the ground. DeMeco's feet are on the ground."

It's no secret that Caserio came to the Texans after spending two decades with the New England Patriots. He was a part of the franchise each moment they won six Super Bowl titles. But Caserio has shown more admiration for building a successful franchise equivalent to the Pittsburgh Steelers with coach Mike Tomlin.

The Steelers took a chance on Tomlin as a 36-year-old defensive coordinator from the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. Seventeen years later, Tomlin has become a Super Bowl-winning coach who has never had a losing record.

Bringing a championship to Houston is Caserio's ultimate goal.

But he would like to do so by working hand-and-hand with a coach who has brought sustainability and affinity to the franchise. Caserio believes Ryans was his coach after he fulfilled 10 desired characteristics during a "lengthy and very positive" interview on Jan. 20.

"You have got to have purposeful intent action and do it consistently day after day," Caserio said. "Honestly, it's about doing simple things better. If you do simple well, okay, it's like we talked about offensively, like philosophically."

"That may or may not be true, but it's going to be about work, and it's going to be our action in this building what we do to prepare ourselves to go out there on Sundays against whoever we're playing and say, damn, we're playing the Texans."

Caserio isn't viewing Ryans' hiring as a quick fix. He understands that building success will not happen overnight.

But Caserio believes with Ryans, the 38-year-old former All-Pro linebacker was the right fit for the team, organization, and his desire to build a winning program under his regime in Houston.

Ryans is joining the Texans as the sixth coach in franchise history. He served as the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator for two seasons.

The 49ers have held their opponents to an average of 18.9 points over the previous two seasons. In 2022, San Francisco recorded the second-most takeaways (30) while giving up an average of 16.3 points. With the help of Ryans' defensive schemes, San Francisco finished the season 13-4.
