'Partners': Texans GM Nick Caserio Welcomes New Coach DeMeco Ryans
HOUSTON — The Houston Texans announced DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach on Tuesday afternoon with a theme of "partnership.''
"We know how important it is to get results now and we have a lot of work to do,'' general manager Nick Caserio said. "I’m excited to partner with DeMeco to build our football team together."
Ryans comes to the Texans after two prominent seasons as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.
His hiring completes a coaching search that began following the firing of Lovie Smith on Jan. 8.
"On behalf of the entire Texans organization, I would like to welcome DeMeco Ryans and his family back to Houston," Caserio said. "DeMeco is a proven coach with a track record of success who has an innate ability to lead people. He is progressive in his vision, a great communicator, a connector and somebody that values collaboration."
Ryans is the third coach Caserio has hired in three years. He has had a pair of one-and-done coaches, which began with David Culley in 2021, followed by Smith.
The Texans have won seven games under Caserio's two-year management. But despite back-to-back losing seasons, Caserio remains optimistic in his commitment to building a winning program.
"We are working to build a sustainable program that has long-term success and DeMeco is the coach we feel is the best fit to help us achieve our goals," Caserio said.
Ryans - a former standout player in Houston who is calling this his "dream job'' - will become the sixth coach in franchise history, the third since Bill O'Brien's dismissal in October 2020.
