Mile-High Hire: Texans Bring in Klint Kubiak as Run Game Coordinator
Former Broncos passing-game coordinator Klint Kubiak has been everywhere, but now the 12th-year coach is the newest member of DeMeco Ryans' coaching staff with the Houston Texans.
Kubiak will serve as the team's run game coordinator — focusing on that aspect of the offense under the newly hired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik — and brings past experience with him, having been on the sidelines of both college and NFL teams.
He has served a total of eight years between the Broncos and Vikings — the Texans being his third NFL team — as well as four years between Texas A&M and Kansas in numerous offensive roles.
His most notable, however, was his tenure with the Vikings from 2019-2021, where he coached the quarterback-receiver duo of Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson.
During that two-year span, Cousins ranked top-10 in the league in passing yards, touchdowns, completions and completion percentage — with the help of Jefferson, who was top-10 in receiving yards, receptions and touchdowns in Kubiak's last year.
Last season, Kubiak entered his fourth year with the Broncos with high expectations accompanying the arrival of All-Pro quarterback Russell Wilson, which ultimately fell short after Denver ranked in the bottom-10 for both completion percentage and touchdowns.
Despite an underwhelming season, he made the most of his situation — his offense still managing to rank in the top half of the league in total passing yards with just over 4000.
As Kubiak prepares for his 13th season, the next challenge facing him and Ryans' other offensive coaches will be navigating the Texans' quarterback situation, which may or may not include Davis Mills or a potential top quarterback pick in the upcoming draft.
But for Kubiak specifically, he has rising sophomore Dameon Pierce to look forward to coaching, who has already proven his passion for the game with his "angry run of the year" win at the 2022 NFL Honors ceremony.
And just 13 days into Ryans' hire, Houston continues to show commitment to building around its new head coach, hoping to turn a corner ahead of the 2023 season.
