Texans Rank High Among World's Most Profitable Sports Teams
Between 2019 and 2021, the Houston Texans went 18-31, alienating Deshaun Watson before watching their franchise quarterback sit out the third of those seasons, as he waited to be traded while also battling a slew of sexual misconduct allegations.
If not for now-outgoing Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder, the Texans would have proven over that three-year span to be the most dysfunctional franchise in the NFL, and perhaps in all of professional sports.
And yet, a new piece by Mike Ozanian of Forbes says that the Texans had a $356 million operating income between 2019 and 2021, making them one of the most profitable sports franchises on the planet:
Among NFL teams, only the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots were more profitable between 2019 and 2021. The difference is those two teams have incredible brands that have been carefully crafted. The Texans were established in 2002 and have hardly been a model franchise since entering the league.
Still, they topped franchises like the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, a reminder that on-field success doesn't always directly correlate to financial well-being. And perhaps that is why there's a perception that some franchises don't seem hell-bent on competing for a Super Bowl.
It will be interesting to see if the Texans remain as profitable -- or even climb higher on this list -- if they become a more stable organization over the next few years. Houston is a major market, and if head coach DeMeco Ryans, quarterback C.J. Stroud and pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. can stabilize the on-field product, there's no reason the Texans couldn't become one of the NFL's elite franchises.
