'Just Get Better!' Texans RB Dameon Pierce Reveals Goals Ahead of Year 2

Entering his second season, Dameon Pierce is excited to elevate his game in Bobby Slowik's offensive scheme.
In this story:

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the future for the Houston Texans. Just this offseason alone they completely revamped the team, hiring coach DeMeco Ryans, drafted C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr. along with multiple key free agency signings.

Besides those, though, running back Dameon Pierce is poised to follow up a strong rookie campaign in his second season. Entering the 2023 season, Pierce's goals are simple, really.

"I don't know — try to get more yards, more touchdowns," Pierce said. "Be a bigger role on this offense. Be a better leader. Just get better. Get better."

In his rookie season Pierce ran for 939 yards and four touchdowns in just 13 games. Had he not missed four games, there is a very good chance that he would have eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark.

Just how he follows up such a strong debut season will have to be seen this fall, however the hire of Bobby Slowik as the offensive coordinator could help him elevate his game.

The new offensive scheme will benefit Pierce, as it is derived from former coach Gary Kubiak.

"I'd still say it's running back friendly," Pierce said. "That's one thing that excites me - We run the ball. I love that. I like the dynamic that coach Slow[ik] brings. He likes to attack the defense in every way possible. If he sees a weakness, he's going to pull that thread until the whole ball of yarn comes loose."

Pierce has shown he has the potential to be one of the best running backs in the NFL, nearly breaking 1,000 yards last season despite missing time to injury. With Slowik now in town, we could be ready to see a true breakout campaign for the budding star.
