Texans Safety Jalen Pitre Has One Major Focus Ahead of Year 2
HOUSTON — Jalen Pitre had an impressive first season with the Houston Texans. He led the team in total tackles (147) and interceptions (five). And if it wasn't for the Texans' 3-13-1 record, Pitre's rookie year may have ended with his first career accolade.
Pitre's goal is to build upon the success he experienced in 2022. And during the first few days of OTAs, Pitre said on-field patience is the key to flourishing in his second season.
"I feel like I developed good patience throughout the year," Pitre said. "It's also one of those things that you could never perfect. So I'm trying to build on that and trying to just slow my eyes down, and that will allow me to play faster and make those plays that need to be made."
Veteran safety Jimmie Ward has vowed to assist Pitre in his second-year development, which has led to the two respective parties developing a firm relationship two months after becoming teammates.
Ironically, Ward said patience is one of the most significant attributes a defensive back must have to play in coach DeMeco Ryans' system. Ward gained the experience during his final two seasons as a member of the San Francisco 49ers, where Ryans served as defensive coordinator.
"He's a good guy," Pitre said. "He's a leader. You can see why he's been in the league so long. I'm excited to play with him. He plays with his hair on fire, and it's fun when you can play with a guy like that."
Pitre has emphasized patience as the primary attribute he hopes to improve. But with his will to continue evolving, Pitre is also hoping to become more vocal with the goal of becoming a leader in 2023.
