During the Houston Texans' final preseason game, rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud threw his first career touchdown vs. the Saints.

C.J. Stroud's night was quickly over in New Orleans. But his play at the Caesars Superdome Stadium ended with an exclamation point.

During the Houston Texans preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints, Stroud led the Texans to an early 7-0 lead after connecting with wide receiver Nico Collins for a three-yard touchdown.

Stroud's touchdown was part of the Texans' most successful drive of the first quarter, where Houston recorded 45 yards in six plays. Finishing a drive with a touchdown was the latest milestone for the rookie prospect.

Stroud is the favorite to start under center for the Texans come Week 1 of the 2023 regular season in Baltimore.

"Evaluation never ends, quite honestly," offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said. "That goes throughout the year. It’s endless. It’s part of the job title of coaching, along with what you do is you critique your guy and emphasize things they do well.

"We’ll keep that within the room – what each individual player needs to work on – but they all have steps they can take. They all have places they can go with their game that they haven’t quite gotten to yet to just be more efficient and just cleaner with the operation and with the footwork and some little things like that, and we’ll just keep grinding through that."

Stroud played two series against the Saints. He finished the night throwing for 16 yards while going 2-for-4. Before connecting with Collins in the end zone, Stroud kept the drive alive for the Texans by finding tight end Dalton Schultz for 13 yards.
