Texans QB Coach Jerrod Johnson Staying in Houston
Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson was a hot name across NFL coaching searches. Thus far, he had already secured interviews with the Saints, Browns, Steelers, Buccaneers and Eagles for their respective offensive coordinator openings.
But now, despite the opportunity for a promotion and to advance his career, Johnson has elected to stay put, informing all interested teams that he has elected to remain with the Texans per a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
According to Rapoport, Johnson wanted to "finish what he started with C.J. Stroud, DeMeco Ryans, and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik."
The Texans were also in danger of losing Slowik, who, like Johnson became one of the hottest candidates for open positions across the league. Slowik also interviewed for multiple head coaching vacancies before ultimately electing to stay put and sign an extension.
BREAKING: Bobby Slowik and Texans Reach New Deal
Johnson started his coaching career in 2017 as a part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.
He then eventually landed his first assistant job with the Colts as an offensive quality control coach in 2020, before becoming an assistant QB coach with the Vikings in 2022.
Upon joining the Texans, Johnson was immensely influential in the development of star quarterback C.J. Stroud, who just completed arguably the best rookie season in NFL history.
In his first year, Stroud threw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns with five interceptions, leading Houston to a 10-7 record and an AFC South title.
Now, Johnson will get another year with his star quarterback, as the Texans look to take the next step under DeMeco Ryans.
