Texans Grateful For Veteran QB Case Keenum During OTAs

Veteran quarterback Case Keenum's impact for the Houston Texans will be measured by his voice and leadership within the position group.
In this story:

Houston — Whether legitimate or not, Davis Mills and C.J. Stroud will participate in a quarterback competition to determine which player will start for the Houston Texans come Week 1 of the 2023 season.

Case Keenum is the only quarterback not in the running to take the helm as the team's starting quarterback. But the Texans did not sign Keenum to compete for the starting job.

They acquired him as a free agent in March to be a trustworthy veteran within the position group. And within the first week of OTAs, Keenum has already met the Texans' expectations.

"Keenum has been awesome," coach DeMeco Ryans said. "He has been great to have. Very smart player. Knows it like the back of his hand.

"It's really good for those guys to have Case, similar to Robert [Woods], right, two veteran guys who are sharp guys, not just in a role to help out, but these guys are competing as well. So that's the cool about having Case and Robert."

Keenum signed a two-year contract to join the Texans following one season with the Buffalo Bills.

The 10-year veteran has thrown for 14,884 yards in 78 career games, to go along with 78 touchdowns and 48 interceptions. Keenum played for the Texans as an undrafted prospect from 2012 to 2014 out of the University of Houston.

He may not impact the Texans' record in 2023. But the advice Keenum will be able to share could be more beneficial, given that his teachings will help create a foundation for Houston's next franchise quarterback.

Stroud described learning from Keenum as a "blessing," while Mills said working alongside the veteran has been "great."

"He's been in a version of it previously, but he just has a ton of built-up knowledge from being in the NFL for so many years," Mills said. "It's been great getting to ask him a ton of different questions and seeing his previous experiences and being able to learn from him. It's been great."

The 2018 season marked the final time Keenum played as a starter. He led the then-Washington Redskins to a 6-10 record while completing 62.3 percent of his passes for a career-best 3,890 yards and 18 touchdowns.
