Texans Sign Cameron Dantzler For 'Little More Depth'

Despite entering the regular season with a productive secondary, the Houston Texans saw a need to add cornerback Cameron Dantzler.

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans are six days away from assembling their 53-man roster, but that has not stopped general manager Nick Caserio from adding more players.

The Texans announced Tuesday afternoon the signing of veteran cornerback Cameron Dantzler. The 24-year-old defensive back joins the Texans after two brief stints with the Washington Commanders and Buffalo Bills.

The acquisition of Dantzler resulted in the Texans waiving wide receiver Alex Bachman.

"Adding Cam to our team adds a little more depth to our corner," coach DeMeco Ryans said. "We will see where Cam is throughout this week while seeing how he can help us."

Dantzler began his career as a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. Injuries have derailed his first three seasons. But when healthy, Dantzler has proven to be a productive cornerback.

Last season, Dantzler appeared in 10 games for the Vikings. He finished the season tallying 50 total tackles, five pass deflections and a game-winning fumble recovery against a former teammate during Minnesota's Week 5 matchup against the Chicago Bears.

With cutdown day less than a week away, Dantzler is behind the eight-ball to make the Texans' 53-man roster. But Ryans believes Dantzler is in charge of his fate in Houston.

"It is all up to the guy when you get added to a team," Ryans said. "The roster is always evolving, and things are always changing. It is all about how quickly the guy can adapt to the scheme and what we are asking him to do. It is all individual-based. And there are a few guys who can thrive in that."
