Texans Rumor: 'Shocking' NFL Draft Move Hint from ESPN's Adam Schefter

We'll put it this way: Houston's attempts at deception aren't working. Other NFL teams are fairly convinced about the plan at No. 2. And a suggestion of a "Schefter Shocker'' isn't changing that.
In this story:

There is wisdom in the Houston Texans' attempts to throw chum into the water as a way of hiding the obvious plan to select a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in this NFL Draft - and make no mistake, that is the obvious plan.

But why not attempt a bit of deception? Why not decline to show their hand? Why not, just in case a competitive advantage is available, try to dazzle the other teams with confusion?

Did somebody say "confusion''? Enter ESPN's Adam Schefter, dutifully playing his part.

When the Texans are on the clock with the second-overall pick, one of either Ohio State’s CJ Stroud or Alabama’s Bryce Young will be on the board. There are other ideas (at quarterback alone, with Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson) and there are other options (as Houston also owns the No. 12 overall pick).

But there is also logic ... and there is the fact that when the Texans were interviewing head coaching candidates (with DeMeco Ryans coming out the winner), every single interview focused on the likelihood of using No. 2 on a QB.

But Schefter, while appearing on NFL Live on Tuesday, toted some water in another direction. ... kind of, once you dig through his muddled monologue.

Said Schefter (as transcribed by Clutchpoints): “I think there’s a lot of conflicting signals and information out there about what Houston is going to do at 2. I think a lot of people assumed that it’s just going to be a quarterback, and in the end, I’m just not convinced, just yet, that that is going to be the case. I do think that we have Bryce Young slated to be the favorite, No. 1 to Carolina. Then Houston’s on the clock, and what does Houston do?''

Well, we suppose we suddenly don't know, Adam. Please go on ...

“It becomes interesting if Houston decided to auction off that pick to somebody that wants to come up and trade for a quarterback at No. 2. Or, whether Houston wants to go with a quarterback of its own, or whether Houston wants to go with one of the top defensive players.''

Adam, that is, frankly, a lot of gibberish. Can you summarize?

"All I’m saying,'' summarized Adam, "is I don’t think it’s a lock that Houston is going quarterback at No. 2.”

That one, we buy. Because two weeks ahead of the pick, of course there is no "lock.'' We also concede that pass-rusher Will Anderson Jr. merits consideration right up there with the QBs - and Houston is certainly engaging in that consideration.

But we'll put it this way: Houston's attempts at deception aren't working. Other NFL teams are fairly convinced about the plan at No. 2. And a suggestion of a "Schefter Shocker'' isn't changing that.
