Texans Will Not Pursue 'Scotch-Tape Veteran' QBs Aaron Rodgers Or Derek Carr
HOUSTON — The Houston Texans will be exploring several different options on how to upgrade their quarterback play in 2023. But the Texans will not look for an upgrade with Aaron Rodgers or Derek Carr.
According to reports from Peter King the Texans are one of four teams reportedly not interested in landing either of the veteran quarterbacks. In addition to the Texans, the Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders and Carolina Panthers will all pass on the opportunity.
"I hear—though it might be smoke—that none of the four wants to scotch-tape a veteran like 39-year-old Aaron Rodgers and probably not Derek Carr," King said.
Although he has established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in league history, Rodgers, 39, would not make sense for the Texans, given that the team is still in the early stages of their rebuild.
The Green Bay Packers could make Rodgers available for a trade by the start of free agency on March 13.
But the lack of interest in signing Carr would mark the second time in franchise history the Texans passed on the opportunity.
The Texans passed on the opportunity to draft Carr on two occasions during the 2014 NFL Draft. Houston selected defensive end Jadeveon Clowney with the No. 1 pick and offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo with the top overall selection in the second round (no. 33 overall).
The draft selection left Carr heartbroken.
"When I was getting drafted, I wanted to go there [Houston]," Carr said. "They didn’t pick me first [overall], but 33rd? I was like, 'Maybe 33rd?' They didn’t want me, so I was kind of a little heartbroken over that."
Following an underwhelming season from Davis Mills, the Texans' next starting quarterback will come down to either C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young following the No. 2 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.
