Texans Sign Guard Shaq Mason to Massive Three-Year Extension
The Houston Texans traded for Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive guard Shaq Mason last month to solidify an offensive line that struggled in 2022. And on Wednesday, they made that deal long-term, extending Mason on a three-year $36 million extension, with $22 million guaranteed, according to reports.
Mason will also receive a $10 million signing bonus. The deal will make him one of the highest-paid guards in the sport.
He is expected to start alongside second-year guard Kenyon Green in the middle and help pave the way for a new-look offense that could feature rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud as the starter.
The deal will came with a late-round pick swap, with the Texans receiving a Tampa Bay seventh-round pick, while the Bucs will land a Houston sixth-round pick.
Mason spent one season in Tampa Bay, giving up just one sack from his right guard position. He started in all 17 games and played 1200 snaps - 99 percent of the team's offensive snaps.
Before his time blocking for Tom Brady in Tampa Bay, Mason spent his time in New England, where he was drafted by current Texans general manager, Nick Caserio.
Caserio selected Mason with a fourth-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
He is also played in 120 games, starting 115 of those games throughout his eight-year career.
He will be expected to immediately come in and challenge A.J. Cann for the starting right guard spot opposite of rookie left guard standout, Kenyon Green.
