Should Texans Sign Free Agent DE Shelby Harris?
Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio has transformed his roster this offseason and hired a new head coach. And there's a good chance he's not yet done with the transformation.
One position group that he could still make additions to is the defensive front, and there's an opportunity to make that group even stronger in free agency. Former Raider, Bronco, and Seahawk Shelby Harris is still available and was recently named by Bleacher Report as one of the most underrated NFL free agents still available.
"Shelby Harris is one of the more versatile defensive linemen still available ahead of training camp. The sizable 6’2”, 290-pounder is listed as a defensive end, but he is adept at both shutting down the run and getting after quarterbacks, assets that should allow him to thrive regardless of where he signs.
"Harris would be a nice signing for any team that wants to improve its run-stuffing capabilities by adding a hard-working, high-IQ defender who is a strong finisher and can put some pressure on the passer."
SI.com is quite high on Harris as well.
"Harris is a power player that can push an opposing offensive lineman into the backfield... Harris’s pressure rate is relatively pedestrian, but he can facilitate opportunities for teammates by simply muddying the pocket or taking away a running lane. Plus, no one is going to be upset if Harris gets half a dozen sacks as a vulture, cleaning up plays created by someone else. He’s done that in three different seasons."
A unit that will already feature Sheldon Rankins, Maliek Collins, Jonathan Greenard and Will Anderson Jr. could benefit from the addition of a player like Harris.
There's no question his best days are behind him, but he's still a solid run-stopper who can add depth at either tackle or end. And he also brings something else that this young Texans team could use: an experienced veteran presence.
