Texans Trade for Cardinals OT Josh Jones
The easiest way to make sure a rookie quarterback feels comfortable is to protect him once the bullets start flying.
The Houston Texans are doing just that, having traded for Arizona Cardinals offensive tackle Josh Jones on Thursday. The full return is Jones and a seventh-round pick for Houston’s fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Jones, a 2020 draft pick, is in the final year of his rookie contract. He returns to the Lone Star State after attending the University of Houston.
One of Jones’ most intriguing traits is his versatility. In the last two seasons, he has played over 600 snaps at both left tackle and right guard, with an additional 230 snaps at right tackle.
Last season was his best as a professional. At left tackle, he allowed only four sacks all season. His 75.8 grade from Pro Football Focus ranked 17th amongst tackles.
Jones gives Houston a handful of options heading into the season. If tackle Tytus Howard is not ready for Week 1, Jones can start at right tackle in his absence. If Houston does not feel comfortable with either of its starting guards, it is possible Howard or Jones will slide inside.
Of course, Jones may also be purely a depth move. For a unit that has already dealt with injuries to multiple starters, including Scott Quessenberry’s season-ending knee injury, insurance is always welcome.
The fate of Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is not yet sealed, but fans can rest assured that the team has done everything in its power to keep him upright.
Stroud will take the field with the starters on Sunday night against the New Orleans Saints.
