Texans Trade: Cowboys Praised as Winners in WR Brandin Cooks Deal
Receiver Brandin Cooks' days as a member of the Houston Texans were clearly coming to an end even as the most recent season was still ongoing.
And we didn't get very far into the offseason before the Texans moved the receiver in-state, sending him to the Dallas Cowboys.
"We never wanted to lose talented players,” coach Demeco Ryans said following the trade. “We’re really trying to acquire as many talented players as possible, so, it’s hard losing him.”
In exchange for Cooks, Houston got back a 5th Round pick this year and a 6th Round pick in 2024 from the Cowboys.
Not terrible compensation, really.
But the draft capital received isn't high enough to consider the Texans the winner in the transaction.
At least not according to an anonymous comment received and reported by 33rd Team.
"In a conference like the NFC where there is no clear favorite, trading away a few late-round selections for veterans who have been there and done that is just great roster building," said the unnamed AFC Executive. "That team desperately needed another receiver last year, and they couldn't get it. Brandin Cooks will be a great compliment to CeeDee Lamb."
Of course, just because the Cowboys are being viewed as winners doesn't mean Houston is a loser, per se.
Really, time will grade this deal based on how the receiver corps shapes up without Cooks and how that unit interacts with the new quarterback presumably being drafted with the second overall pick of this year's NFL Draft.
