Bill Guard Reveals Thoughts on Houston Texans 'Haymaker' Trade For Stefon Diggs
The Houston Texans made one of the biggest moves of the offseason this month, trading for Buffalo Bills star receiver Stefon Diggs.
It was a move that floored fans and other franchises across the NFL alike. But it also came as a gut-punch to his former teammates, including Bills guard Dion Dawkins.
During a recent interview with Jim Rome, Dawkins described what it was like to lose Diggs, likening it to a similar situation he faced earlier in his career with former Pro Bowl running back LeSean McCoy
"The Stefon Diggs one was definitely a haymaker," Dawkins said. "The last time that something like this happened was when I was in my earlier years and it happened with LeSean McCoy. And for a player that has that type of impact and popularity and stat-based weight for their career, it just hits you in a different way."
Diggs started his career as a fifth-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings out of Maryland in the 2015 NFL Draft. Over the next four years in Minneapolis, Diggs developed into one of the NFL's top pass catchers, hauling in 365 catches for 4,621 yards and 30 scores over five seasons.
He was then sent to Buffalo in a trade in 2020, where he took his game to yet another level, catching 445 passes for 5,372 yards and 37 scores in four seasons.
Diggs has been so good, in fact, that he earned a First-Team All-Pro nod in 2020, Second-Team All-Pro in 2022, and made four Pro Bowls - all with the Bills. In fact, in 2020, he led the NFL in both receptions and receiving yards.
But according to Dawkins, the Bills are going to do their best to pick up the pieces and move forward with what they have. He also believes, despite the loss of Diggs their championship window is still open.
“When you’ve got a team of guys that lead with good hearts, good athleticism, good football, and when we put that helmet and the pads on and that jersey and it says Bills, that window,” Dawkins said. “It’s always open. It could be a little bit more, but nah, it’s open. And it’ll always be open. And as long as Josh (Allen) is at quarterback, that’s what I can talk for.”
