Deshaun Watson to C.J. Stroud: How to Fix Texans 'QB Stability'?
The NFL is a quarterback-driven league and it's no secret that the best teams tend to be led by the best quarterbacks. That's why Patrick Mahomes is what he is ... and that's why the Houston Texans drafted C.J. Stroud at the top of this year's selection process.
It's nice if a franchise has long-term stability under center. ... and in that department the Houston Texans have not been "nice.''
The Texans are tied as the NFL's second-worst team in quarterback turnover rankings over the last decade, per a CBS Sports study. The Texans have had a whopping 10 quarterbacks since the start of the 2013 season, tying the Los Angeles Rams for the second-most among the NFL.
To qualify for this list a quarterback had to start at least four games in a season for a team. Only the Cleveland Browns have had more quarterbacks start, with 11 QBs in the last 10 years.
Houston's starting 10 QBs are Deshaun Watson (53 games), Davis Mills (26), Brock Osweiler (14), Ryan Fitzpatrick (12), Case Keenum (10), Brian Hoyer (9), Tom Savage (9), Matt Schaub (8), Ryan Mallett (6), Tyrod Taylor (6.)
No. 2 overall selection C.J. Stroud is poised to lead the Texans in 2023. At OTA's, Stroud brought the energy along with new coach DeMeco Ryans. Also, Bobby Slowik takes over as a first-year offensive coordinator after spending the previous six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.
Much of the negative can be directed at the Watson situation. He seemed like the epitome of "stable'' ... until he wasn't. But now? Excitement is high due to Stroud, who threw for 8,123 yards and 85 touchdowns for the Ohio State Buckeyes, only tossing 12 interceptions in 830 attempts.
Leading the league in quarterback stability is the Chiefs with only two starting quarterbacks in 10 seasons (Mahomes, Alex Smith.) The reigning Super Bowl Champions Chiefs are favorites to again win the Lombardi Trophy with Mahomes on a 10-year lucrative contract.
Other teams with the most stable rankings have been buoyed by longtime franchise quarterbacks, like Aaron Rodgers (Packers), Matthew Stafford (Lions), Eli Manning (Giants), Derek Carr (Raiders) and Philip Rivers (Chargers).
All in all, Houston hopes to improve its security and dependability at quarterback with Stroud at the helm.
